Online social clubs prove beneficial to moms

The pickup lines are the same. But they're delivered with a mommy twist."Do you come here (the playground) often?""Do you want to come to my place, or shall we go to yours?"Mothers of young children, who a few years ago may have been looking for Mr. Right in a bar, now are seeking Mrs. Right and her kids in between the swings and the slides at the local playground.Women also are going online to find moms who match their personality and interests, much like singles use an online dating service."You scope 'em out," says Magalie Belanger, 31, about prospective mommy-friends in Helena, Mont. "You see how they deal with their children, and with yours."It's like dating, but the dates are with other moms and their children. While the kids play, hopefully without tantrums or biting, the moms are free to talk about the things they have in common, from the lofty subjects of religion and politics to the more practical topics of teething and diaper rash."Women, they want someone else who is going through the same thing," says Drury Sherrod, a Los Angeles social psychologist who studies friendship.Often, that can mean seeking out other women in the same trimester of pregnancy or whose children are similar in age, he says.Kate Harmon, 41, of Concord, Mass., recalls how 10 years ago she fell into the perfect support group while her husband was a graduate student in Boston.

'View' Panel Discusses Naming a Teddy Bear Jesus

Right, we had talked about Gillian Gibbons, who was the British teacher who let her children at the school name a teddy bear Muhammad. And we were talking about whether she was going to-

JOY BEHAR: In the Sudan.

SHEPHERD: In the Sudan and whether she should get the lashes or not-

BEHAR: Which is a Muslim country.

SHEPHERD: In the Muslim country, and she's been pardoned, so she will not get lashes, she will not get-

[applause]

BEHAR: She was about to go to jail also.

SHEPHERD: She was going to jail too.

BARBARA WALTERS: But, you know, we were, we were talking here, and, and I said well, I wonder that if in a public school here, a school teacher allowed, not allowed, but said that the children could name the teddy bear Jesus, would there be any reaction? And you-

GOLDBERG: Only in a public school.

Eagles flying high behind QB Ryan

Ryan earned All-ACC honors last season, when he threw for 2,942 yards. He sprained an ankle in the opener and broke his left foot in an October win over Virginia Tech but missed just one game.

"Last year he played on one leg," O'Brien said. "He had the high ankle sprain all the way until, actually, he broke his foot in the Tech game last year and then couldn't move [around]. ... It's a credit to him last year, what he did in leading that football team."

A lot of quarterbacks, said O'Brien, know who the Nos. 1 and 2 receiving options on a play are and will take off and run if those two targets are covered.

"Last year, the run option was out. You couldn't sprint out with him," said O'Brien, whose Wolfpack lost to BC last month. "We had trouble running nakeds and boots.

Three’s not a crowd for the BBC in a digital era

In the spirit of the Facebook era, viewers will be able to become friends of Lily via a BBC website and help to shape the programme by suggesting the questions that she should ask guests - the kind of sensible television-to-web integration that smart new channel controller Danny Cohen has had on his agenda since the day he arrived this year from Channel 4.

This kind of programme is targeted exactly at the younger viewers that BBC Three aims to serve and is hardly likely to find offence with anybody who actually watches it. Yet if you believe the critics, whose ranks include John Humphrys, the channel is so chock full of unBBC nonsense that it is a disgrace to broadcasting. Their argument is based on programmes they have almost certainly not watched but whose titles sound outrageous enough – F*** Off, I’m a Hairy Woman, My Man Boobs and Me, and Teens Addicted to Porn to name a few.

His war secret out, Prince Harry redeployed

It is, for those there, a life-or-death situation. You can not fuss around over a particular individual, even if he is royalty. Everyone has to be 'one of the boys,' subject to the chain of command. Otherwise, it does not work, and your friends die.

Do you think it might be 'fun' to stand there and invite others to shoot at you? Do you think Harry was merely playing games? I don't. I am a pacifist by nature, but I think you, and others here, insult by your comments all soldiers who are doing the work and doing what they think is right, at great risk.

Regardless of what one thinks of Canada's role in Afghanistan (and I have my own strong views about that), regardless of what one might think about the public relations value to the royal family and support for a war from this incident, one has to admit that Harry was there, serving with the army on the front lines.

Jeff Thelen's Blog

On top of that, my cell phone went off. I told the caller I'd call her back.

But all of this happened BEFORE the movie, during the trailers, or previews of the upcoming films. Once the movie started we all hushed up, except for the occasional gasp. (we saw Sweeney Todd, which is really quite gross)

Still, a man sitting directly in front of me turned around at the end of the last trailer and said, "OK, let's keep the comments to ourselves now that the movie is starting." I said "Yea, we planned on it once the movie started." After hearing the exchange, the group behind us (all adults) actually made several comments about the movie during the movie. (I found them all pretty funny) But the gentleman in front of me didn't say another word.

So, here's my question to you.

Guilty pleas in old rape case in Greenwich

Stamford (AP)_ Two men charged with a rape dating back to 1991 in Greenwich after police made DNA matches have pleaded guilty in exchange for sentences of 10 years in prison.

Brian K. Higgins, 36, of New Haven, and Robert A. Barter, 37, of Greenwich, Tuesday pleaded guilty to first-degree sexual assault and kidnapping in connection with a 1991 rape of a then-19-year-old woman inside her apartment.

A prosecutor says Superior Court Judge John Kavanewsky Jr. accepted the pleas and agreed to sentence both men to 10 years in prison and 10 years of special probation including sex offender treatment, counseling, and other conditions.

The Connecticut State Police Crime Lab in Meriden in May linked Higgins to the crime and the next month police arrested Barter.

Severely disabled don't have to pay extra airfare

Even the seats on a school bus are bigger and roomier than anything AC provides on any plane except maybe the cockpit seats.

The only thing on the airlines CEOs mind is the bottom line. Maintenance is way down as events show.

Passenger service is non existent. Crews are cut back to the max and the passengers are packed in to increase the profit.

Blame the investors and the airlines, not the passengers because at the end of the day the users pay for it all.

Cardiff University Great Hall

Another cruel, senseless press kicking for the perennial nu-prog whipping boys? And another Angst postbag overflowing with death threats? God, let's hope not. The last few months might have seen the critical fraternity give Mansun a harsh ride, but they've done nothing to lessen their fans' ardent support. They remain convinced of their idols' prodigal genius, certain that History Will Prove Them Right. Look around this venue, and you'll see that where once stood the Manics fan, now stands the Mansun fan: feather boa proudly draped across shoulders, eyeliner fastidiously applied, gathered here in their hundreds at this rallying point for the modern freak. For a band to mean so much, it stands to reason that there must be pearls of empathy hidden somewhere beneath Mansun's progressive, ambitious swirl.

Laos native migrates to United States and fuels his love for tennis

Greeley's Meng Manichanh may be 56 years old, but he moves around the tennis court with the ease of someone half his age.

Nobody knows that better than Greeley's Jeff Lejeune, his opponent Sunday at the Greeley Tennis Championships. The 33-year-old saw Manichanh run down nearly every ball and make seemingly every shot in his 6-0, 6-1 victory against Lejeune in the men's 3.5 singles quarterfinal round at Centennial Tennis Courts.

It was difficult on the weary legs of Lejeune, who had to be up before 3 a.m. the previous two days to work his job stocking shelves for the Frito-Lay potato chip company.

He didn't get to bed until 10 p.m. Saturday night and was up at 2:30 a.m. Sunday morning working before his match at 8 a.m.

"I meant to ask (Manichanh) yesterday if we could back the match up to 11 a.m.
