They can do that one of two ways: they can plan for the short term and buy a free agent (the band aid approach to franchise maintenance), or they can blow this team up and start over. As trade rumors are center Mats Sundins constant companion, it is apparent that the Leafs have decided to rebuild by packaging their brightest, but aging, star. As Sundin is 37, there will be limited interest in his services, probably from a team in serious contention hoping to expand its bench. Because of a no-trade clause, Sundin wields veto power in any transaction, but would he bar a trade to a playoff caliber team and stand in the way of franchise reconstruction? Other veteran players are likely being dangled as bait as the Leafs must get younger. Right wing Darcy Tucker and defensemen Bryan McCabe, Tomas Kaberle, and Pavel Kubina are aging veterans who might help a team in contention.
Ford recalls 9.6 million vehicles
DEARBORN, Mich., Feb. 29 (UPI) -- Ford Motor Co. has recalled 9.6 million vehicles built between 1992 and 2004 to repair a faulty cruise-control deactivation switch that poses a fire hazard. The switches pose a fire risk, the company said in a statement. The service action "is a quick repair," that will be done at no charge to owners. The recall includes vehicles dating back to 1992; Lincoln Town Cars, Mercury, Ford and other model year cars, pickups and SUVs were listed on a company Web site. About 5 million owners have had their vehicles repaired leaving 4.6 million unrepaired vehicles on the road, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said. The risk of fire involves the possible leak of brake fluid through the switch into the speed control system's electrical components.
Two dead after Valentine's Day tiff
A Northern Territory man shot dead his partner and stuffed her body in a freezer on a rural property outside of Katherine, before turning the gun on himself. Police found the bodies of the unemployed couple in the Helena Road area, 8km north-west of Katherine, about 4am (CST) on Valentine's Day morning. They had been called to the property 12 hours earlier - and cordoned off the area and evacuated several houses - following reports of a disturbance involving a gun. The couple, known in the neighbourhood for their recent relationship problems, were believed to have been aged in their 50s and had been dating for about two years, today's NT News reported. A neighbour told the paper the dead man, known only as Wayne, and his girlfriend Jacqueline Morrison were drinking at the property on Wednesday when they got into a heated argument.

Michigan Supreme Court hears domestic partner benefits case
An Ingham County Circuit Court judge ruled the benefits did not violate the state constitution, but the Michigan Appeals Court ruled they did. In February 2007, the Michigan Court of Appeals ruled to overturn the trial courts decision that public employers may offer these benefits without violating the "marriage amendment." The ruling was appealed by Attorney General Mike Cox, who intervened as a defendant. The Supreme Court will weigh in by June of 2008 on which court was correct. "It is potentially hugely important," said Marc Spindelman, an associate professor of law at Ohio State University and a visiting professor at the University of Michigan. "It is important nationally and if they (the Michigan Supreme Court) breaks from the Ohio court and nullifies domestic partner benefits it could set a standard." The Ohio Supreme Court ruled earlier this year that the Ohio marriage amendment only impacted actual relationships that contained the bundle of rights attributed to marriage.
Exploding moose steals copper cables
Absolutely hilarious. I think she should be given a visa and allowed to stay indefinitely. She has done an invaluable service to this country, she has exposed a fool proof way for Al Quaeda to breach our national borders and she has also shown how worthless ID cards will be. After all, she was given a pass to allow her into Parliament, which one might think would be somewhat secure. HMG: 0 Brazilian Cleaning Ladies: 1 Steve Browne "...officials seem not to know where she got the pass or to whom it had been issued in the first place" Every security pass I've ever carried has had two things in common, they all bore a picture of my face, and my name. Sometimes more, but never less. This seems to suggest that despite all the TWaT hysteria that our 'representatives' foist upon us, those within parliament still don't really believe the threat sufficiently to implement even the basics of a door entry system such as one might find in any mid size corporation.
Hip-Hop Rumors: Ray-J / Kay Slay! Update on Dr. Donda West! Paris ...
Shout out to Wendy Williams and Charlamagne…I checked them out yesterday and their show is funny. Wendy was talking about how she had these rumors on Lil' Kim and they were thinking something was gonna happen to her. Wendy was there during the real era, before the blogger zone. (If she leaves New York, she should move to Delaware or Philly!) Jay-Z did the Apollo last night. I didn't hear anything crazy though. I heard Nelly, Diddy, Chamillionaire and Beyonce came out to enjoy the show. I heard Jigga performed with Nas, Beanie, Freeway, Bleek and the Young Gunz. Rumor has it, B got her groove on through the whole show. “Me give my heart to a woman – never," Jay-Z once rapped. I heard DJ Kay Slay is hosting the new Ray-J mixtape.
Quickies: Suri Spice, Hayden, Paris, Lilo & More
If Suri Cruise could tell parents Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes what she wants, what she really really wants, she'd probably demand earplugs. The mop-topped tot, 19 months, and her equally shaggy-haired parents recently paid a surprise visit to pal Victoria Beckham and the rest of the Spice Girls as they rehearsed for their about-to-launch world tour in Los Angeles. According to a posting on the group's Web site, Suri got her toddler groove on and "danced along to the music." Chimed in Mrs. Beckham, "Katie has told me before that she used to be a big Spice fan so it was great for her to meet the other girls." "You can't schedule rehab for me. And I don't think you can schedule any DUIs." That's Hayden Panettiere, 18, tempting fate in the new issue of GQ, which names her its "Obsession of the Year" and disturbingly features her posing in a ruffled bikini while holding a hula hoop and in a frilly nightie while clutching a teddy bear.
Diamond Mogul Receives Angry Valentine
JDate users scouring the Jewish dating Web site in anticipation of Valentine's Day may have found a surprising match. Lev Leviev, the controversial Israeli diamond mogul, had appeared to register a profile on the site, including such information as, “in my free time, I enjoy: Exploitation, Profiteering, Union-Busting, and Macrame." The JDate profile was one of several recent Valentine's Day-themed acts of protest directed at Leviev, who in reality is not looking for love online but is a married father of nine and an active member of the Chabad-Lubavitch sect of Orthodox Judaism. His detractors oppose his use of diamond mines in Angola and what they say is his extensive involvement in housing construction for Jewish settlers on the West Bank. “Because a great deal of jewelry shopping goes on during the weekend before Valentine's Day, we thought it was appropriate to reach out to Valentine's Day shoppers and encourage them to stay away from Leviev's shop," said Issa Mikel, a human rights activist who works with Adalah-NY, a coalition of organizations strongly critical of Israeli policy.

Harrison DILLARD's biography
He won a second gold medal in the 4x100m relay. But Dillard still wanted to win an Olympic hurdles championship. Four years later, the 29-year-old Dillard got his chance in Helsinki. He was hard-pressed by fellow American Jack Davis, but he surged ahead at the end and crossed the finish line first. The usually calm Dillard leaped for joy and exclaimed, "Good things come to those who wait." Dillard won another gold medal in the relay to bring his career total to four. .
