The great Heathrow con

But they know full well that the absence of legal standards on noise leaves communities defenceless. New EU air-quality standards had looked like an insuperable hurdle to a third runway, but are being fudged with ropey claims that road traffic emissions will fall. Two weeks ago the Advertising Standards Authority ordered British Airways to withdraw the claim, made by its CEO in an e-mail to Executive Club members, that the third runway would reduce carbon dioxide emissions because aircraft would no longer have to waste fuel queueing to take off or land. This flatly contradicted Whitehall models, which assume that the new runway will raise CO2 emissions by 2.6 million tonnes a year from the 200,000 extra flights.

Secondly, take the arguments about capacity. BAA's figures demonstrate clearly that Heathrow is not full.

Food for Thought

With baby boomers entering their retirement years, Alzheimer's disease looms as perhaps one of the most significant public health issues of the future.

According to the Alzheimer's Association, the number of people with Alzheimer's disease will more than triple from the current 4.5 million to 16 million by the year 2050, when the last of the boomers will have reached their mid-80s.

Those alarming statistics are helping to fuel research into the relationship between diet and Alzheimer's disease. While results so far are inconclusive, evidence suggests that people who adopt dietary practices recommended for a healthy heart will also reduce their risk of developing Alzheimer's disease.

"If it's good for the heart, it's good for the brain," says Betty Kuehne of the Albuquerque Alzheimer's Association.

Malawi churches review role of condoms in AIDS fight

Still, he added, "The church has not changed its stand on the use of condoms, and we will not support wholesale use of condoms."

In the past, a number of church denominations in Malawi have condemned the use of condoms for encouraging, as they believe, promiscuity and pre-marital sex among young people. Instead of condoms, the churches have called for sexual abstinence before marriage.

Bishop Bvumbwe was speaking at a meeting to review an MCC manual on HIV and AIDS. He also said that clergy should fight any harmful cultural practices that might increase the spread of the virus.

Bvumbwe said, however, that the process of uprooting harmful cultural practices should not affect Malawi's national traditions. "We should preserve our Malawian identity and not become westernised," he cautioned.

Tell Me About It: She doesn't have to pay forever for error

Dear Carolyn: Guy and Girl date for a year and a half, live together for a year. Girl screws up, loses Boy's trust, Girl moves out, but Boy and Girl still date, albeit in an "open relationship," much to Girl's dismay. Girl knows she did wrong and tries to go with the "open relationship" because she wants to be with Boy, but is finding the "open" part hard to deal with. How does Girl comes to terms with the situation, and enjoy the "open relationship"?

-- D.C.

Dear D.C.: Girl realizes that no matter how serious her screw-up, she isn't going to fix it by debasing herself.

If you can't abide the new terms, then decline to live by them. Tell him you love him, want him, regret hurting him, and will be happy to see him, when and if he stops taking sadistic pleasure in exacting revenge for his pain.

The End Of The Wag: Wave Goodbye To Coleen And Gemma

“WAVE GOODBYE TO WAGS," commands the Star.

You'd best stand on a stool or bed and lean out of a window because the Wags are overseas.

Goodbye, Coleen McLoughlin, says the Mail, waving so hard that Wayne Rooney's whale-voiced lover turns her head to the side and looks out across the Caribbean seas.

Coleen is in Barbados. It's front-page news in the Express. This is Coleen's “new look". It's much like her old one, albeit in a leopard-print and not accessorised by a freckled man with sunburn.

Goodbye, Gemma Atkinson, who is said to be dating a footballer called Mr Bent. She's in a bikini.

Wags are so out of fashion, notes the Star, that now only “one in 100 dream of being like sexy Gemma Atkinson… and teaming up with footie stars".

Gemma Atkinson in balcony romp

Then another level, and then another...

And when you reach the right floor after pushing all her buttons in the hotel lift, it just gets better and better.

Gemma's former lover Karl Benion today reveals how jungle-hot Gemma gave him the elevator ride of his life followed by SPANKING romps on a balcony during a steamy two-month fling.

They'd only just met on holiday in Majorca when the ex-Hollyoaks star pounced.

Karl, 28, grins: "We'd been out clubbing and were in the lift on our way back to my apartment when she suddenly went wild and started ripping my clothes off.

Swearing

"She was wearing very little herself. I ended up with one hand jammed against the stop' button between floors...and the other was, well, quite full!

"It was amazing.

San Marcos girls buckle down to empowerment

"I Am ... Enough" seminar held to inform students of their right to make good choices

When asked by keynote speaker Jennifer Seitel, many of the more than 200 teenage girls in attendance Saturday at the "I Am ... Enough" seminar at San Marcos High School raised a hand to acknowledge that they had not used a seat belt in the past month. The response didn't surprise Seitel, 30, who tours the country warning students of the tragic results of not buckling up.

As a 16-year-old, Seitel was injured in an automobile crash that left her a paraplegic. Her appearance at the seminar and her no-holds-barred presentation illustrated ---- sometimes graphically ---- the consequences of unwise decisions made by too many young people.

Lisa Stout, a counselor at the school and an event organizer, said the focus of "I Am ...
