Survey: Journey to Rid Gay Attractions Not Harmful

Change for a man wrestling with homosexual attractions is not only possible but the pursuit of change can also be a positive experience, a recent survey shows.

The survey by People Can Change, a non-profit and non-religious organization that offers training, healing and support for men with unwanted same-sex feelings, revealed that 9 out of 10 men who participated in a weekend program reported a decrease in distress, shame and self-condemnation. They also felt better about themselves.

People Can Change founder Rich Wyler calls it an "incredibly vital" finding, especially at a time when psychologists, gay rights groups and other critics of ex-gay programs contend that the process of change out of homosexual attractions is harmful.

The organization surveyed men from across the country who participated in a program called "Journey Into Manhood" a 48-hour intensive personal-growth and self-discovery weekend for men serious about resolving unwanted homosexual feelings between January 2002 and December 2006.

Silverchair enjoys a silver lining

IT WAS the year of the 'chair. Having scooped the ARIA Awards, co-headlined the biggest Australian arena tour of the year and scored a No. 1 album, Silverchair has capped off its resurgence by earning the most played song on Australian radio.

The band's comeback single Straight Lines was the most spun track on Australian commercial radio in 2007. It nudged out the American band the Fray's How To Save A Life, and Gwen Stefani's The Sweet Escape.

Yet Silverchair's triumph masked a drop in commercial radio's support of local artists. Besides the Newcastle trio, only one other Australian act, Thirsty Merc, landed in the top 10. (Kiwi trio Evermore rounded out the top 10). In fact, after Thirsty Merc's 20 Good Reasons, at No. 4, the next best Australian effort was Missy Higgins' Steer, all the way down at number 21.

Despite battling a respiratory ailment, Arizona's Webb gave up one hit and struck out two in two shutuout innings and the Chicago White Sox defeated the Diamondbacks 7-5 on Friday afternoon.

"His offspeed stuff seems to just get better and better," Arizona manager Bob Melvin said.

Buehrle also threw two scoreless innings, allowing a hit and a walk and striking out two.

Pitching on an 82-degree afternoon in the desert, Webb retired the side in order in the first, striking out Orlando Cabrera. In the second, Webb gave up a leadoff single to Jermaine Dye, who was doubled off first on A.J. Pierzynski's liner to second baseman Orlando Hudson.

Hip-Hop Rumors: Fun Flicks From The Grammys!

If all goes Jay-Z's way, the rap mogul will tie rock legend Elvis for the most number one albums in history, a feat that depends on the success of the rapper's American Gangster album.

Jay-Z, born Shawn Carter, landed his ninth number one album last year with Kingdom Come, which sold about 680,000 in its first week, the rapper's best to date.

The Kingdom Come album put Jay-Z in a tie with another iconic rock act, The Rolling Stones, who have landed number nine number one albums throughout their 40-year career.

If Jay-Z's American Gangster sells well, only The Beatles would have offered the music world more number one albums, with an incredible 19.

American Gangster's main opposition include Cassidy's highly anticipated album B.A.R.S.

On preaching to the converted

Though her love affair with Nelson Algren had been over for many decades, his gold ring was still on her finger, according to her wish, as she was buried beside Sartre in the Montparnasse cemetery in the heart of Paris.

A recipe for disaster

AS a post-colonial state that came into being through the amalgamation of ethnically and linguistically diverse regions, Pakistan was conceptualised as a federal state that would accord maximum provincial autonomy to the federating units and ensure the fair distribution of resources among them.

In an ideal federation, only a few subjects like defence, currency, foreign relations and communications belong to the centre while all others are considered provincial subjects.

Team waits, celebrates, waits more

In any case, the events were a fitting conclusion to a zany regular season. Just three weeks ago, Ohio State fell to seventh after losing to Illinois. Since then, all six teams ahead of them lost.

"After a college football season filled with intriguing results … we would be honored to represent Ohio State and the Big Ten in the national championship game," Tressel said through a representative. "We know we will be up against a tremendous challenge whomever the final standings present as our opponent."

Inside the Buffalo Wild Wings on Hilliard-Rome Road, the atmosphere alternated between wild cheering and disbelief.

"It's just shocking," said Kim Barnett, 57, of Columbus, his scarlet block O cap showing his allegiance. "I had a good feeling that Oklahoma could win.

Our idea doesn't work! Let's do it! According to Tamar Jacoby, the recent arrest of 1,300 suspected illegal workers at six Swift & Co. meat processing plants demonstrates the need for 'comprehensive immigration reform.' I don't understand:

1) "Comprehensive" reform is supposed to be a deal in which amnesty for current illegals (and a guest worker program) is coupled with a tougher workplace enforcement program to block future illegals. Sounds good, but the last such "comprehensive" reform--the1986 amnesty--failed miserably when its workplace enforcement program turned out to be ineffective at stopping employers from hiring illegals. The idea behind the current Bush proposal is that this time workplace enforcement will work.

Giants shatter Patriots’ perfect season

It's the greatest victory in the history of this franchise, without question," Mara said after accepting the Vince Lombardi Trophy from commissioner Roger Goodell.

It was also the most crushing defeat in New England history, because it prevented the Patriots from becoming the first team to complete a 19-0 season.

"It's not even worth talking about," Patriots linebacker Tedy Bruschi said when asked about his team's failed quest for perfection. "It's over now. When you don't finish, that's all we're about. We're about finishing the task at hand. We expected to win here, and when you come up short, you have to tip your hat off to the other team and respect the job that they did. They're the world champions."

Manning, known mostly for being Peyton's younger and far-less-successful brother when the postseason started, led his team to four straight road victories in the playoffs and won the same Super Bowl MVP award that went to his brother a year ago.
