Chief: Officer abused power
Despite not having any official business related to the arrest, Jasso accessed police computer records to find the truck's registered owners and the owners' backgrounds. Also while on duty, Jasso contacted one of the truck's owners and arranged to buy it for $5,000, even though it was worth more than $15,000, Smith said. Jasso then met with a second owner of the truck who was in the Nueces County Jail, saying he was there on police business. Smith said in the letter that when the co-owner was released from jail, Jasso, while on duty, picked up the man and drove him to a credit union where he paid the owner $1,500 -- meant to be the man's share of the $5,000. The department's Criminal Investigation Division started to look into the incident in May 2007 after an assistant district attorney told Smith about the truck's sale.
Got Cupid? Common interests key to finding love
"Basically people need to have common interests and common goals in life and they (should be) good at communicating with each other," said limited licensed psychologist Joe Kuchenbuch at Battle Creek's Psychological Consultants of Michigan. Naturally, most people will look for someone they enjoy being around and who will help them move forward in life, but Kuchenbuch said it may take a year or more to get beyond infatuation. Take David Hunter, 28, and Colleen Ellis, 29. The Battle Creek couple dated three years before getting engaged. Hunter wanted to finish college before getting married, but admitted it took time learning how to communicate their true feelings. Ellis agreed. "There were some rough spots when we first started dating, but I think we've learned to talk to each other better," she said.
Intel, Microsoft, Uncle Sam sink big money into multicore
One of the fundamental problems that the institute will tackle is the ever-increasing distance between memory and a core's execution units in massively multicore systems. Systems with hundreds or thousands of cores will have to find a way to get data to the right core at the moment that it's needed; so this kind routing, caching, and interconnect research will be a key for the IAA. The folks at Berkeley's new Parallel Computing Lab know about the processor-to-memory problem all too well. David Patterson and his colleagues have scored $10 million in funding from Intel and Microsoft to research software design in the multicore era. This project grew out of a series of conversations on the topic that started at Berkely in 2005, conversations that culminated in a paper [PDF], a wiki, and now the grant.
SFGate: Daily Dish
Britney Spears reportedly is going home to Louisiana with her mother Lynne as soon as she is released from the hospital in Los Angeles. The singer was taken to the UCLA Medical Center in an ambulance, surrounded by a police convoy, early on Thursday after a reported "intervention" by family members at her Beverly Hills home. Spears' lawyer Michael Flanagan reveals Lynne is waiting for the singer to be discharged, so she can whisk her back to the family's Kentwood home. Flanagan tells Page Six, "Lynne is extremely concerned for her daughter and would like to take Britney back home to Louisiana and get her out of Hollywood. "Brit has an amazing support system in Louisiana. "Lynne was holding up reasonably well, but her first priority and concern right now is with her daughter and helping her through this very tough situation that she is in." According to various Internet reports, the singer will be held at the hospital on a metal health order after concern about the singer's health was raised by her psychiatrist.
Back to the turn of the century
Memories of being best friends forever and promises of love flooded their minds as they waited to open the can.“Good memories," said Jasper Jackson, now a senior at Salem High School. While catching up, the group waited anxiously for their former fourth-grade teacher, Ashley Duffey , to open the tin and discover what they placed inside.Duffey didn't remember everything the students placed inside but she recalls telling the students to write their future dreams and wishes along with drawing a picture of how they thought they would look.“I think I put something stupid in there," said Tyler Brown, a senior at Patrick Henry High School. “I just want to see."Tyler brought along his mother, Bonnie Brown, to the event. Brown, who often volunteered with Tyler's class while he was at Raleigh Court Elementary, said she wanted to see if Tyler placed one of her belongings in the tin eight years ago.“I want to see what he put in there, and plus I want to see if he put something he wasn't supposed to in there," she said.
Bluffton boy gives his birthday donations to Heroes on Horseback
Logan held his party three days after his Feb. 6 birthday at the Double C Ranch near Ridgeland last month. He and about 20 friends celebrated by mingling amid a menagerie of goats, pigs, skunks, ostriches and a camel. But the only presents he got were donations to Heroes on Horseback, the nonprofit that allows disabled children and adults the chance to ride and care for horses. Each of the children brought a few bucks from their parents and a neighbor friend donated another $100. In the end, they had $350. Last Saturday, Logan and his family went to the .

Beef recall hits local schools (11:45 a.m.)
LAS CRUCES — Officials with the Las Cruces and Gadsden school districts confirmed Tuesday that their cafeterias have supplies of recalled beef from a California slaughterhouse that was using inhumane practices. Officials reassured, however, they stopped serving the meat after learning from the U.S. Department of Agriculture about the recall. "We removed the hamburger meat that might have already been out at the cafeterias," said Art Ruiloba, spokesman for the Gadsden district. "Menu changes were made, and we're just waiting to see what directions USDA will give to destroy the product." Ruiloba said 750 cases of hamburger meat were affected. School cafeteria workers are taking steps to accommodate the recall. "We've left hamburger meat completely off our menu for February and March," he said.
