Wesley Snipes' Tax Fraud and Conspiracy Trial Opens in Ocala, Fla.

OCALA, Fla. — Attorneys for Wesley Snipes ticked off more than 70 potential character witnesses, including several celebrities, as jury selection began Monday in the actor's tax fraud and conspiracy trial.

Muhammad Ali, Spike Lee, Tom Brokaw, Barbara Walters, Woody Harrelson, Sylvester Stallone and Gus Van Sant were among the names mentioned.

Snipes, 45, and two co-defendants, both known tax protesters, are accused of conspiring to defraud the U.S. of millions of dollars. Snipes allegedly first collaborated with Eddie Ray Kahn and Douglas P. Rosile in 2000, then stopped filing tax returns.

Prosecutors say he fraudulently tried to retrieve $11 million in paid 1996 and 1997 taxes and directed his movie companies to stop withholding taxes from employees.

Sania tamed by Venus after brave show

Melbourne, Jan 19 Sania Mirza put up a spirited fight against eighth-seeded American Venus Williams before crashing out in the third round of the women's singles event of the Australian Open here today.
Sania gave the former Wimbledon champion a run for her money before losing 7-6 (0) 6-4 in an intense battle which lasted over one-and-a-half hours.

In a gutsy performance, the 31-ranked Indian matched Venus shot for shot in the first set to drag it to a tie-breaker.

However, the tie-breaker proved to be a one-sided affair as Venus swept past the Indian to go one up.

The 21-year-old was mainly undone by the 30 (rpt 30) unforced errors, which spiked her chances.

The Indian ace committed as many as 16 unforced errors in the second set which tilted the game in the favour of the American.

OLCOTT: Brothers continue 'polar bear' tradition

Once Scott returned to Newfane, the brothers tried making the swim a true family tradition.Alas, their kids weren't interested."When our oldest ones were about 10, they tried it once and said, 'Never again!' " Rick said. "We were thinking if we passed it on, we could be spectators in dry clothes, but that didn't work out.""Yeah, people in the crowd were yelling, 'child abusers!' That wasn't a good thing," Scott added. The Dimons say charity — raising money for Olcott Lions Club programs — is what keeps them coming back to the swim every March. Unintentionally, Scott says, he and Rick inspired a second Polar Bear event, the 5K run that precedes the swim and benefits YMCA Camp Kenan. On Polar Bear Day about 13 years ago, the brothers decided to jog to the swim instead of driving. They donned their polar bear hats and ran 5 miles, attracting attention and cheers as they went.

Many fans, tiny dog, lots of awe greet racing bicyclists

Fans lined the streets. They walked with dogs. They pushed baby strollers. They huddled under umbrellas. They rode into town on rusty old rigs and $6,000 carbon fiber racing machines, in jeans and in Lycra, all to watch Stage 2 of the Tour of California.

Niners land WR Bruce

Receiver Isaac Bruce agreed to a two-year deal with the San Francisco 49ers on Friday night, one day after the St. Louis Rams released one of the most prolific receivers in NFL history.

An NFL source, speaking on condition of anonymity because the contract hadn't been signed yet, said Bruce chose to stay in the NFC West with the 49ers, bolstering one of the league's worst receiving corps after 14 seasons with the Rams. The deal is worth $6 million.

Bruce will be reunited in San Francisco with 49ers offensive coordinator Mike Martz, who ran the Rams' offense during the team's two most recent trips to the Super Bowl. Bruce, who teamed with Torry Holt for several years of lofty statistics in Martz's wide-open offenses, is third in NFL history with 14,109 yards receiving, only behind former 49ers receiver Jerry Rice and Tim Brown.

Ghosn says US auto market in recession

The head of Nissan Motor Co. said even if the United States is not in recession, its auto industry is.

"We are very lucid on the situation of the industry that there is a recession in the United States, at least in the car market," Chief Executive Carlos Ghosn told reporters, saying automakers face rising costs for iron ore, precious metals, aluminum and other materials.

"These represent risk for the industry," he said.

Ghosn, who is also president and CEO of Renault SA of France, expressed optimism that the market will improve. Renault owns 44 percent of Nissan.

The American auto market "will not stay in recession for a long time," he said.

U.S. car and truck sales totaled 16.1 million vehicles in 2007, down from 16.6 million the year before, according to Autodata Corp.

The secret scandal of the refugee beggars

But they want her out now. She's begged and delayed her landlords, and even hidden from them to avoid eviction. The week before last, the Refugee Council gave her £40. Last week, Positive Action in Housing (PAIH) - the anti-racism charity - gave her £20. That's all she's had to live on. She's been surviving on sandwiches.

"I pray to God that he'll help me," says Lidya. "I'm scared of being homeless. I am not a man. I don't know what will happen to me on the streets. I know that if I go back to Eritrea I will be killed."

If her luck runs out and her landlords throw her onto the streets this weekend, PAIH will dip into its emergency funds to pay for a hostel bed for her for up to three nights. After that, it will ring round its dozen or so active volunteers to see if anyone will give her a bed.

Focus on Function

Endurance and body-fat percentage and the strength of your heart and core are benchmarks, but we overlook the bottom line: how we feel and what we can do. It has nothing to do with awards, unless they spur you. Beyond the adulation, top athletes are fueled by inner affirmation. They know what they need — and train for it. So should you.

And the awards go to … 'Ratatouille,' 'No Country,' 'Atonement' By Bob Longino | Monday, February 11, 2008, 08:32 AM

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

With the pending end of the Writers Guild strike, the future looks red (as in carpet) for the Oscars. I saw my first Academy Awards ad on ABC Sunday night.

The weekend was full of awards. "Ratatouille" was the main attraction at The Annies (it won eight awards) and also did well in animation categories at the Visual Effects Society.
