UTC hall of fame adds four tonight

Four former University of Tennessee at Chattanooga standouts have a new honor to add their list of accomplishments: Hall of Fame member.

Lori Massengill was a two-time All-American tennis player and Beth Alexander Edgar was twice named Southern Conference softball pitcher of the year; Eric Smith led the UTC basketball team in scoring in a breakthrough season, and Mike Hogan twice led the football team in rushing.

The UTC Athletics Hall of Fame's newest class will be honored at a dinner tonight and at halftime of Saturday's men's basketball game at McKenzie Arena. The inductees were chosen by a nine-member panel of UTC officials and former student-athletes.

Smith was the leading scorer, at 16.4 points per game, on the 1981 men's basketball team, the first in the program's history to win a SoCon championship and compete in the NCAA Division I tournament.

New cookbook celebrates old Brass Tavern Inn

In 1845 when the Brass Tavern and Inn first opened its doors on the corner of Old Pike and Old Highway in what is now Munster, the journey from this section of Northwest Indiana into Chicago took about a day.Because the journey was hard (travelers could be mired in mud when the dirt roads were wet or cloaked in dust in dry weather), the tavern offered a place to rest and to dine. What made stopping there even better is that Julia Watkins Brass, who owned the Brass Tavern with her husband (and ran it while he was looking for riches in California during the Gold Rush), kept a crock jar full of sugar cookies, and her menus were described by contemporaries as "attractive and delectable." Time moves on.Now the trip from Ridge Road (Old Pike) and Columbia Avenue (Old Highway) in Munster takes less than an hour instead of a day.And the tavern, which in 1864 became the Stallbohm Inn, closed its doors in the 1890s as railroads and paved roads made traveling much easier and eliminated the need for a stagecoach stop. The building burned in 1909; all that is left to mark the site is a bronze historical plaque donated in 1927 by the Julia Watkins Brass Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. But the Brass Tavern and those days still live on, in the memories of those who have heard stories of the inn and in the old recipes handed down by generations of local residents. Now these recipes and more have been collected by the Munster Historical Society and presented, along with photos and stories of early area settlers, in a delightful book titled "The Brass Tavern Cookbook: A Collection of Nostalgic Recipes Commemorating the Establishment in 1845 of The Brass Tavern & Inn, the First Permanent Settlement in Munster, Indiana," compiled by JoAnne Shafer. "The oldest recipes for a baked ham glaze and apple crisp both date back to 1855," says Shafer who, with other members of the society, worked on this project for 12 years.Besides providing a history of the region, the cookbook also tells a story of how the foods we eat have changed (partridge wrapped in vine leaves having been dropped from most menus today) -- and stayed the same.

Gen Me: No more self-centred than you

It's all about them and the older ones are soaking up al the CPP funds and the health care dollars too. Which most of them never paid into. There will be nothing left when I get to retirement (approximately 90 years old based on my current RRSP investment portfolio) and certainly less than nothing by the time you retire. Am I bitter? Sometimes, but it's just not worth it. The more things change the more they stay the same. Older folks will always resent and be critical of the younger generations - it's because you're young and we're not. We were young once though and some of us can even remember how great it was. Enjoy it while it lasts. Posted 29/01/08 at 10:50 AM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment .

City police conducting monthly parolee checks

This month and last, police did 28 checks and found four minor violations. Nobody was home during seven of the checks. In one case, police officers found a sex offender with childrens toys and a camera, both of which violated the terms of his parole.

The Department of Corrections says there are about 35,000 parolees statewide, roughly 640 of whom live in the Springfield area. Springfield police did not have statistics Monday on how many of those are considered violent offenders.

DOC spokesman Derek Schnapp said the agencys 471 parole agents conduct parole compliance checks daily, often accompanied by police officers.

The new initiative is part of the federal Project Safe Neighborhoods program. U.S. Attorney Rodger Heaton said the program is not designed to put people back in prison.

Salmond: 'I'll quit if Budget falls'

If there is no agreement on a replacement First Minister after 28 days, an election is called automatically. The spokesman did not rule out the possibility of the First Minister and his Cabinet resigning at 5:05pm if the Budget is rejected by parliament. But he stressed ministers remained "confident" that it would be approved. The spokesman also hinted that Mr Swinney would be unveiling extra concessions this afternoon. He added: "If he has anything to announce, he will announce it in his speech to parliament." The speech is expected to include a review of the resources used to tackle drug addiction and more emphasis on rehabilitation. An accelerated programme of reduced business rates and a shift in the public-transport budget are also likely, as is more money for health in Edinburgh.Mr Swinney has already given considerable ground on police numbers, promising to find an extra £10 million from the prisons, roads and health budgets to recruit an extra 300 officers next year. This was intended to be enough to buy the support of the Tories, but the Conservatives want more for the fight against drugs and on business rates.Mr Swinney has also already conceded ground to the Greens, promising more than £4 million extra for community anti- climate change projects. However, the Greens also believe Mr Swinney needs to go further to secure their abstentions.

Egyptian firm says it wins mobile phone licence in NKorea

SEOUL: An Egyptian firm says it has won the right to provide a mobile phone service in communist North Korea, a country which has strictly restricted such services to the general public. Orascom Telecom, in a statement on Wednesday on its website, said the licence was granted to its subsidiary CHEO Technology, which is 25 percent owned by the state-run Korea Post and Telecommunications Corporation. It said the terms allow it to offer services throughout the country over a 25-year period with an exclusivity period of four years. "Orascom Telecom intends to invest up to 400 million dollars in network infrastructure and licence fee over the first three years in order to rapidly deploy a high quality network and offer voice, data and value-added services at accessible prices to the Korean people," it said.

Video: Slideshow on concussions in hockey

Kaminski lined up an unsuspecting opponent for a big hit in a game on Dec. 28, 1999, while playing for Orlando, but the guy saw him at the last second and jumped up.

"His elbow hit me right on the button and that was it for me," said Kaminski.

When he came home with a concussion, Megan thought he'd go to bed for 48 hours and return to normal, as he'd done before.

She couldn't have been more wrong.

The symptoms were long-lasting: insomnia, irritability, vertigo, sensitivity to light. He couldn't exercise because of headaches as soon as he got his heart rate up. His memory shot, he couldn't find his car after shopping for groceries. He'd forget his PIN number at the bank machine – it was his jersey number.

The game Kaminski worshipped brought him to his knees.

Bush urges Republican Party to unite

Here is a link to excerpts from that interview-

http://www.counterpunch.org/brzezinski.html

ZB revealed that CIA support for the mujaheddin had started before the 1979 Soviet invasion. Its purpose was to instigate a Soviet invasion, leading the Soviet Union into a Vietnam-War like conflict. Brzezinski viewed the end of the Soviet empire as worth the cost of strengthening militant Islamic groups.

Last summer, ZB endorsed Obama for president.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/08/24/AR2007082402127.html

What on earth was Obama thinking when he chose ZB as one of his foreign policy advisors??? http://www.nysun.com/article/71123

Why hasn't any journalist questioned Sen. Obama about his choice of ZB as one of his top foreign policy advisors?

Wednesday, January 16

SEKOFF: Of course it is. But the point is, your own network, MSNBC, here we are, they did an exit poll in New Hampshire and 73 percent of the people said they were worried about a major terrorist attack. And you know the Clinton campaign which is the most poll and focus test group knew that. And of course, that‘s what she was trying to do.

(CROSSTALK)

ABRAMS: Kate, I think she was trying to make it an issue in the campaign, but my question is, what‘s wrong with that?

OBENSHAIN: I‘m with you Dan. There‘s nothing wrong. They are making a serious miscalculation if they don‘t talk about it. But the problem is whenever the Democrats or frankly, Republicans, but will talk about Democrats right now, whenever they even talk reasonably about the threat of terrorism, when they mention it, a real events that occurred, Democrats pile on and say, oh, gosh, they‘re fear mongering.
